Extension

The title of this blog has two meanings.

One;

if you haven't posted all of the work previously posted on my blog, then you have an extension to do this today.

I would suggest that you use this time wisely and ensure that all relevent work is completed by the end of the lesson. Use your Self Managing skills to arrange your time appropriatly. I will be checking all blog links at the end of todays lesson so that I can mark the work posted on your blogs.

Two;

If you have finished all of the work- WELL DONE!!! Here are some extension tasks for you to complete.

Read pages 34, 35, 36, 37, 38 and 39 about Packaging and Marketing. You need to use your Independent Enquirer skills to make notes on these pages and post a blog /blogs on the numerous issues covered by the chapter. Don't forget that I am not asking you to copy all the information and to use pictures to improve your posts.

Finishing Your Work

During todays lesson you should be using your Self Managing skills.

You need to have completed all work by the end of todays lesson. If you are unsure of what work needs to be finished then look at my previous posts below. Remember that I will be marking your work from your blog, so all work needs to be posted there.

If you have completed all of your work and posted it on the blog, come and see me and there will be some extension tasks for you to complete.

Thanks,

Mr Thomas

Research Task

Hi all.

So the next task is to write a blog about Global Responsibility. All the information you need for this task on Page 48 to 51 of the AQA Design and Technology Product Design Book.

I do not want you to copy out all of the information!! You need to use your Independent Enquirer skills to pick and choose which bits of information you use. Be selective, but do not do the bear minimum.

You may want to concentrate on the Carbon Footprint of products, Fair Trade, Renewable and Non Renewable resources and the Six R’s.

Poster

If you have finished your logo redesign and ensured that all of the posts stated in the previous post are on your blog, then you need to complete this task.

Your task is to create a poster that advertises a product that your company produces. On this poster you should use the companys new logo that you have designed. You can produce your poster by hand or by using a computer program. Below are some examples of what some of my other students have produced in the past.

Enjoy.

What should I have posted on my Blog?

So far you should have the following posted on your blog;

  • Two research pages. One should be about 'Printing Techniques' and the second should be about 'Packaging'.
  • You should have a post about the history of your Brand/ Logo/ Company.
  • The projects Design Situation, Design Brief and Initial Specification should be posted.
  • You should have scanned in your research sketches and posted them onto your blog.
  • You may also be in a posistion to upload you development work. This may mean scanning in your development sketches or posting your screen shots of you using a drawing program to develop your logo.
  • A post should also be posted of your finished logo.
Remember to feel free to write blog enteries about other areas such as your feelings about the project and how well you feel it is or isn't going.

Ways of developing your logo

How you develop your logo is up to you and you have two choices;

You can do it the 'traditional' way by sketching the development of your and toning and colouring your work. If you do it this way then you can scan in you worksheets on the A3 scanner and post them on your blog.

The second option is to use a computer program to develop your program. You could use PhotoShop, Firworks or even PowerPoint to develop your logo. It is really important to record your development if you are using a computer program to develop your logo and this is easily done by taking screen shots that show your progress. Record them on a couple PowerPoint slides and post them on your blog.

Happy developing!!!!

Development of your selected logo

Your next task is to draw your chosen logo in the top left hand corner of a new page. This drawing should be an exact replica of your chosen logo. From this we are then going to start to ‘develop’ your logo.  Remember to draw a border when creating this new page. You may want to think about the following questions when developing your logo;
  • Are you going to change the shape or shapes in the logo?
  • Are you going create a totally new idea?
  • Are you going to change the layout  of the logo?
  • Are you going to change the colour of your logo?
  • Are you going to rename the company?
Use the example development ideas below as an inspiration!!

Cover for Monday 7th February 2011

Hi guys.
Really sorry I am not in today.
Objectives-
To write your Design Situation, Design Brief and Initial Specification.
To sketch a variety of existing logos in order to analyse what successful logos have in common.
To begin the development of the logo you have chosen to change.
PLTS
Self Managers- Set yourself goals for what you want to achieve during the lesson. Manage your time effectively to achieve these goals and stay on task.
You should have written your Design Situation, Design Brief and Initial Specification and you now need to post this on your blog.
Once this is complete you need to begin some sketching. You need to fill one or two A3 sheets of paper with sketches of existing logo designs. Try to copy them as best of you can. This will help you develop your sketching skills. Also add colour and any other details of the logos you have chosen. What have successful logos got in common? Maybe you could post you r thoughts on your blog?
Once you have done your research you need to start to develop your chosen logo. I would suggest drawing the original on one part of your page and then changing it in a number of ways. You could change the shape, slogan, colours or entire look of the logo, it is up to you.
Have fun, use your skills and remember to be CREATIVE!!

Sketching!!!

Hey.

So the next task is to 'sketch' some existing logos that you are inspired by. You can choose any logo, but you must try to draw the logo as it is presented. The idea of this exercise is to allow you to practice your sketching and toning skills ready for when you develop your chosen logo. You may use the images posted above on my next blog or you can use the Internet to research your own.

Remember that the emphasis of this project is on PRESENTATION so you should try to ensure your work is well presented.

Happy sketching.

Design Situation and Design Brief

Design Situation
Advertising is a multimillion pound industry. Advertising includes logos, packaging, point of sale displays, websites and television campaigns. International companies from Ford to McDonalds spend millions of pounds each year on advertising. Even smaller companies spend large amounts of their budget on good advertising campaigns.
Design Brief
I am going to redesign the logo for ????????. I will also design and make a piece of packaging for one of their products (name the product here) and design and make a point of sale display for that product.
Initial Specification
My products will have or do the following;
Display the product that is for sale

History of a Brand or Logo or Company

Your next task is to identify the company/logo/brand that you will be doing your graphic design work for.

As with all projects, we have to some research!! You need to write a brief summary of your chosen company's history (this shouldn't be any longer than 500 words!!). Maybe you could find out specific facts about the company's logo or brand (i.e. Cadburys use a very particular type of purple for their products and they have copyrighted that particular shade of purple!!).

Please try not to 'copy and paste' directly from a website as this would be poor form!! Also remember that anyone in the WORLD can see your blog, so if you copy someones words and they read your blog, you could be sued for copyright!!

Peace.

1st Task

Your first task is to post the theory sheets you produced last week onto the blog. You will remember that the tasks were as follows;

Printing Techniques

Your first task;

Use the CD ROM player to complete a research page on the following areas;
  Offset Lithography (especially the 4 colour printing process)
  What CMYK is and why is it important
  Find out what the different sizes of paper are and is there a basic rule that can be applied in order to remember the names of the sizes and the how big they are?

Make sure that it is attractive, eye catching and contains all of the main information about the subjects above.

Packaging

Your next task;

To complete a research page about packaging. Use my pro forma as an example and create a second information sheet about packaging.

You should pay particular attention to the main for areas and make the sheet attractive and eye catching.

You can also use the internet and the GCSE books as other sources of information

You should have already completed these two tasks. So all you need to do is to post them on your blog.

Task One complete- BOSH!!!

Product Re-Design

So, the project.

The project is an introduction to the world Graphic Design, Styles and Techniques. We will be looking at the materials used in the graphics industry (namely paper and card) and the production of graphic products.

The main focus of the product is on your presentation skills. Your presentation skills will be essential in producing a successful blog as well as using your sketching skills to re-design the logo of your choice.

The main aim of the project is to re-design a companies logo. You could, for example, re-design the logo of a world famous brand, such as Addidas or McDonalds. On the other hand you may choose a company that has  particular interest to you (do your parents own their own company and need the logo to be re-branded, does your old primary schools logo look tired and warn?, do you live in an area that is 'up and coming' and a particular shop needs to be re-branded?) and re-design their logo.

As I have said earlier you will be set certain tasks and be asked to complete them and post them on the blog. The should show the 'story' of your project from start to finish.

Mr Thomas

Will you choose to 're-brand' Addidas???

The most recognised logo in the world!!
